The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is marked on July 30 every year. Our association “Safe Step” marks this date every year and works to prevent human trafficking. This year, we marked the mentioned date by creating a short, educational video, which contains useful information regarding this problem and which can serve as guidelines for everyone on how to recognize human trafficking and protect ourselves.

You can watch the mentioned video at this link: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1041622971292021

The activity of recording the video was realized as part of the project of marking important dates, which is financially supported by the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Human trafficking is a topic that is very serious and represents a big problem, and this topic is very little talked about.

We have selected the most important 6 facts concerning the problem of human trafficking, with which we want to inform the public about this problem.

1) Anyone can be a victim of human trafficking. In practice, it has been shown that these are mostly women and children, but also men, especially when it comes to forced labor.

2) Victims of human trafficking are not only poor people, but people from all levels of society.

3) A trafficker is not only an unknown person, but it can also be a known person – even a family member. Also, when it comes to an unknown person, it is someone who appears in the life of a potential victim and develops a relationship with her/him, by offering a job or engaging in an emotional relationship and the like, because in this way he/she recruits the victim.

4) Forms of human trafficking are: sexual exploitation, labor exploitation, forced begging, forced to commit crimes, forced to marry (forced or arranged marriage), organ trafficking, but also digital exploitation.

5) When it comes to forced marriage, as a form of human trafficking, it is very important to emphasize that arranged marriage, or often child “marriage”, is a criminal offense and it is not and should not be part of anyone’s tradition, nor can tradition be an excuse. Arranged marriage is a severe form of violation of the rights of a child or an adult, who entered into a marriage union under duress. When it comes to child marriage, regardless of the child’s consent or not, it is a criminal act, because children are not physically or emotionally developed, and child marriage, i.e. extramarital union, has a very negative impact on their psychophysical condition, future and growing up.

6) As in the case of arranged marriage, the most common victims of begging are children. When you see a child or an adult begging on the street, do not give them money. That money ends up with the trafficker. If you want to help, offer to buy them food or other necessities. Check all circumstances and report begging.
